Immigration Law - Immigration Knowledge

Immigrants are those foreign nationals who enter the United States with the intention to remain permanently. All applicants for entry are presumed to be immigrants unless and until they show otherwise. If they can show that they intend to leave the country after a temporary period of stay then they are non-immigrants - you'll find information about them in another section.

The five commonly used ways to immigrate to the U.S:

  • Employment Based
  • Family Based
  • Asylum/Refugee
  • Humanitarian/Victim Based such as Victims of Domestic Violence and Victims of Human Trafficking
  • Diversity Visa Lottery
While the list is not comprehensive the first two categories include the overwhelming majority of immigrant admissions. There are some minor avenues for immigration such as private bills but they are relatively uncommon.
